Jubilee Year 800th Anniversary of the Passing of St. Francis

Celebrating the Jubilee Year Honoring St. Francis

Celebramos el año jubilar en honor a San Francisco, en español

Pope Leo XIV proclaimed 2026 to be a special Jubilee Year honoring the 800th anniversary of the death of St. Francis of Assisi – in which every Christian, “following the example of the Saint of Assisi, may himself become a model of holiness of life and a constant witness of peace.”

During this Year of Grace, Pope Leo invites the faithful to engage in reflection, prayer, and reconciliation―in keeping with the spiritual legacy of St. Francis.

Year of St. Francis of Assisi Plenary Indulgence

The Pope’s decree grants, during this Jubilee Year from January 10, 2026, to January 10, 2027, the possibility of obtaining a plenary indulgence.

An indulgence will be granted to those who participate in a pilgrimage to any Franciscan conventual church, or place of worship in any part of the world named after St. Francis or connected to him for any reason. The sick, the elderly, and caretakers unable to leave their homes can also obtain a plenary indulgence under the usual conditions “if they join spiritually in the Jubilee celebrations of the Year of St. Francis, offering their prayers to the Merciful God, the pains or sufferings of one’s life.”

The plenary indulgence is granted under the usual conditions: sacramental confession, Eucharistic communion, and prayer according to the intentions of the Holy Father, with a heart detached from sin. It may also be applied in suffrage for the souls in Purgatory. It may be obtained by members of the Franciscan Family, ecclesial communities inspired by the charism of St. Francis, and all the faithful. During the Year of St. Francis, they need only make a pilgrimage to a Franciscan church or a place of worship dedicated to St. Francis, take part in the Jubilee rites or pause in prayer and meditation, and conclude with the Our Father, the Creed, and invocations to the Blessed Virgin Mary, St. Francis, St. Clare, and the Saints of the Franciscan Family

Thus, this Year of St. Francis presents itself as a time of favor, a grace offered to all, so that—as the Pope hopes—“feelings of Christian charity toward one’s neighbor and authentic desire for harmony and peace among peoples may be reborn in hearts.”
