Catechist’s Prayer

Each year, the Catholic Church in the United States designates the third Sunday in September as “Catechetical Sunday”— a day on which to celebrate and pray for the Church’s mission to teach the Gospel to all people.

The Church will celebrate Catechetical Sunday on September 18, 2022.

This year’s theme is “This is my body given for you”

Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical Sunday is a time for all to rededicate themselves to this mission as a community of faith. This Sunday all those that serve as catechists, parents, godparents, and teachers will be prayed over at Mass.

A Catechist’s Prayer

Loving Father, pour forth your Holy Spirit
upon me that I may be a good catechist of
your Word, your Son, Jesus Christ.
Render my mind and heart so open, receptive
and responsive to your Holy Spirit that, like
Mary, I might become a living instrument of
your Word to others. Help me to be a faithful
witness to Gospel life so that your Church may
become ever more alive.
Let the fire of your love so enkindle my heart
that I may be an instrument of drawing others
to love of you in the Church of your Son.
I ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
