Help Resettle Refugees in the South Bay

The South Bay Refugee Resettlement Team invites you to learn how we can help resettle a refugee family in the area. There are lots of opportunities both big and small to lend a hand. Remember, Jesus was a refugee!

The Families: Since the Spring of this year, we have been working to resettle a family of 4 from Afghanistan, a Father, Mother, and 2 young boys who arrived in Los Angeles in early April. Shortly after their arrival, we learned a close family member was in the final stages of the refugee application process.  A second team was quickly set up in the area to welcome this family of 5 (Father, Mother, and 3 children ages 12, 10, & 1). Each family entered on a Special Immigrant Visa due to their role in assisting the US government in Afghanistan, which led to persecution by Taliban after the fall of Kabul.

Our Teams: Our all volunteer teams support these families by welcoming them into the community, helping them find jobs and a place to live, paying for rent and utilities for the first 3 months, teaching them English, providing cultural orientation & friendship, connecting them with the local community & useful resources, and walking with them as they build their new lives in America.

Our Partners: This is a community-led resettlement initiative that allows everyday Americans to take on the responsibility of welcoming a newcomer to their communities. To make this dream a reality, our Team has partnered with No One Left Behind (Nation-wide non-profit helping relocate Afghans who helped U.S. troops abroad) & Home for Refugees USA (OC based non-profit providing local teams technical assistance in resettling refugees).

Our Needs: Anything you can do to help makes transition to life in America easier – donated goods, financial aid, time helping & prayers! Please check out the links below for more ways to assist.

Background on Previous Efforts: Abrupt changes to U.S. immigration policy have disrupted refugee resettlement and cut off access to resources for newcomers. This has led to two failed matching attempts for our team in Fall of 2024 and March 2025.  Please pray for the refugees around the world and trust that the Lord will provide for the needs of his children.

Help us welcome the refugee family during their transition to life in America, please fill out this Interest Form and we will contact you.

The goal is to help provide a safe and smooth transition for the family in their first 90 days, not to adopt the family long term. Key is to be welcoming, friendly, and promote independence while making new friends and connecting them to the community. For more information contact Joe Tvrdy at the Church Office.

It takes a village!
