Daniel Osorio, a parishioner of OLG, will be ordained as a Deacon on Saturday, June 7 at 9 AM at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels.
Thanksgiving Mass & Celebration
We will celebrate at OLG on Sunday, June 8, at the 8 AM Mass (Spanish) and 12 PM Mass (English) Mass. After Mass, there will be a reception in the Parish Hall. All are invited to join.
Meet Deacon Daniel Osorio and Mirna Rayon
Deacon Daniel and Mirna have been married for 28 years and have 4 children. They’ve dedicated the last 5 years to Diaconate formation with the Archdiocese of Los Angeles while working full-time for the County. Much of their personal life was put on hold as they immersed themselves in theological studies, service projects, and transformation in prayer and heart. 
We look forward with joy to serve our parish and our community in whatever God asks of us. These will be very exciting times, and we feel blessed in this new stage of our family’s journey. – Daniel

El Diácono Daniel y Mirna han estado casados por 28 años y tienen 4 hijos. Han dedicado los últimos 5 años a la formación Diaconal en la Arquidiócesis de Los Ángeles mientras trabajaban tiempo completo para el Condado. Gran parte de su vida personal quedó en pausa mientras se sumergían en estudios teológicos, proyectos de servicio y una transformación profunda del corazón, y en la oración.
Esperamos con alegría servir a nuestra parroquia y a nuestra comunidad en todo lo que Dios quiera de nosotros. Van a ser tiempos muy emocionantes y nos sentimos bendecidos en esta nueva etapa de nuestra familia. – Daniel
Q&A With Daniel & Mirna
How did your journey begin at OLG?
Mirna: We got married 28 years ago and our honeymoon was in Hermosa Beach. I thought to myself, wow, wouldn’t it be nice to live here someday?
Daniel: Our family was living in Los Angeles and at some point we decided to move. God blessed us with the opportunity to live in Redondo. Our children were so happy! Right after moving, we hopped from church to church. One day there was a bible series playing on cable and I had purchased a cable subscription just to see this series. It was sometime in the summer, when we were watching the series as a family. When we happened to watch the part of Jesus’ crucifixion, with lightning and an earthquake, suddenly, a gush of rain started to pour outside our home in Redondo, with lightning, just like in the scene of the movie. Our daughter said it was a sign from God. Summer is always hot and dry but this strange weather began just as we saw Jesus die on the cross in the movie. We decided to stay at Our Lady of Guadalupe. It was also the music at the parish that touched us deeply.
How has your faith evolved?
Daniel: I was that guy who sat closest to the church door with one foot in the church and the other foot out the door. I realized something was missing. Later, I met Fr. Carlos, and one day I asked him, how can I help? We became Lectors, Eucharistic Ministers, Sacristans, we assisted with baptism preparation, taking communion to the sick, and Mirna taught Catechism. I kept asking Fr. Carlos, what else can I do? Finally, Fr. Carlos asked me to attend a Deacon Orientation session and that’s where we first learned what a Deacon is. We prayed and prayed, and after discerning for a long time, we submitted our application to the Archdioceses of Los Angeles with Fr. Carlos blessing, and 5 years after here we are now. We moved to Carson, but we stayed at Our Lady of Guadalupe.
What do you look forward to as a Deacon?
Daniel: We look forward with joy to serve our parish and our community in whatever God asks of us. These will be very exciting times, and we feel blessed in this new stage of our family’s journey.

¿Cómo comenzó su camino en OLG?
Mirna: Nos casamos hace 28 años y nuestra luna de miel fue en Hermosa Beach. Pensé: ¡Wow! ¿No sería hermoso vivir aquí algún día?
Daniel: Vivíamos en Los Ángeles y en cierto momento decidimos mudarnos. Dios nos bendijo con la oportunidad de vivir en Redondo. ¡Nuestros hijos estaban tan felices! Justo después de mudarnos, empezamos a visitar distintas iglesias. Un día estaban transmitiendo una serie bíblica por cable, había comprado la suscripción solo para ver esa serie, era verano, y estábamos viéndola en familia. Cuando veíamos la parte de la crucifixión de Jesús —con relámpagos y un terremoto— de repente comenzó a llover fuertemente fuera de nuestra casa en Redondo, con relámpagos, justo como en la escena de la película. Nuestra hija dijo que era una señal de Dios. El verano siempre es caluroso y seco, pero este clima tan extraño comenzó justo cuando vimos a Jesús morir en la cruz en la película. Decidimos quedarnos en Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. También fue la música de la parroquia lo que nos tocó profundamente.
¿Cómo ha evolucionado tu fe?
Daniel: Yo era ese que se sentaba lo más cerca posible de la puerta de la iglesia, con un pie dentro y otro fuera. Me di cuenta de que algo me faltaba. Más adelante conocí al Padre Carlos y un día le pregunté: ¿Cómo puedo ayudar? Nos convertimos en Lectores, Ministros de la Eucaristía, Sacristanes, ayudamos con la preparación para los bautizos, llevábamos la comunión a los enfermos, y Mirna enseñaba Catecismo. Yo seguía preguntándole al Padre Carlos: ¿Qué más puedo hacer? Finalmente, el Padre Carlos me pidió que asistiera a una sesión de orientación para el Diaconado, y fue allí donde aprendimos por primera vez qué es un Diácono. Oramos mucho, y tras un largo proceso de discernimiento, presentamos nuestra solicitud a la Arquidiócesis de Los Ángeles, con la bendición del Padre Carlos, y 5 años después, aquí estamos. Nos mudamos a Carson, pero nos quedamos en Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe.
¿Qué esperan de esta nueva etapa como Diácono?
Daniel: Esperamos con alegría servir a nuestra parroquia y a nuestra comunidad en todo lo que Dios quiera de nosotros. Van a ser tiempos muy emocionantes y nos sentimos bendecidos en esta nueva etapa de nuestra familia.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A CATHOLIC PRIEST AND A DEACON
Priests and deacons hold ordained positions with distinct roles and responsibilities.
Priests are ordained to celebrate the sacraments, lead the community in worship, and provide pastoral care. They have the authority to celebrate Mass, hear confessions, and administer the sacraments.
Deacons are ordained to serve the community and complement the pastoral work of priests. A Deacon is dedicated to service and outreach ministry, especially to the sick, suffering, and homebound. They have the authority to proclaim the gospel and preach during Mass. Additionally, Deacons conduct liturgical services, including baptisms, weddings, and funerals.
Deacons typically wear a stole that crosses the chest, or comes down on one side, while priests wear a stole that hangs down on both sides.
