Your Homework for Next Time (June 23)

Please take some time to do the “homework” and prepare for the session, so we can make AWESOME use of our time together online 🙂

I) Bishop Barron on the Ten Commandments

If you forgot to watch Bishop Barron’s video for the June 9 session 🙂 please watch it now and take a few moments with one of the questions for reflection

Bishop Barron gives a nice, if professorial, breakdown of the Ten Commandments. Watch it, and be attentive to how they apply to your life.

For reflection:

a) Do you struggle with following one of commandments? Which? How? Why?
OR, related to this
b) How well you live out one of the commandments – maybe one that you have down really well 🙂  What helps you live it out well???

II) Keep Current with Your Mass Journal

By now, all of you have a notepad, booklet, blank pages stapled together … and your using it as your Mass Journal. Right? lol

In your journal, you should be writing down one or two things that caught your attention about the readings or what the priest said in his homily after the readings.
At the next session, Jon will ask 3 people to share what they journaled from the Sunday Masses since the last session. Remember, the livestream Masses are here on the OLG website:  https://ourladyofguadalupechurch.org/discipleship/live-stream-mass/

III) “Climate Check” for What’s Going On – with You / The World

Reflect on how things are going for you – the ups and downs.Or reflect on your feelings about any of the current events.

How does your Catholic faith help you each day with this?
Do you pray unceasingly? Just when all’s good? Or really only when things are tough?
Do you read from the Bible? Daily readings, Sunday readings (http://usccb.org/bible/)

Be prepared to share about this – as much as you are comfortable with …
If you can find a faith-related video reflection that expresses what you’re thinking, that would be amazing to share with the group (as song, a prayer, …)

Read on for a summary (below) of the June 9 session. And before you leave this page, fill out this brief response what your takeaways were for this session.

Recap of Jon’s June 9 Session: The Ten Commandments

These are some notes on Jon Galvez’s June 9 session. You’re all still on the hook for his ongoing assignment: Mass Journals!  🙂  Scroll to the bottom for more info on that.

Jon started the session with a video he put together with a people from a prayer group. It’s a Pass the Bible challenge – quarantine style. Have a look.

What do you do to pass on the Good News to others?????

The Ten Commandments

Quick quiz: where can you find the Ten Commandments in the Bible?

Exodus 20:2-17 and Deuteronomy 5:6-21

You’ll find the Ten Commandments with different wording and ordering, depending on the translation and the denomination of Christianity.

For Catholics, the following is a common statement of the Ten Commandments:

1 Thou shalt not Have other gods before me
2 Thou shalt not Take the Lord’s name in vain
3 Thou shall keep The Sabbath day holy

4 Thou shalt not Dishonor thy father and mother
5 Thou shalt not Kill
6 Thou shalt not Commit adultery
7 Thou shalt not Steal
8 Thou shalt not Bear false witness
9 Thou shalt not Covet thy neighbor’s wife
10 Thou shalt not Covet thy neighbor’s material goods

The ultimate significance of the commandments is to join the people of God in a binding covenantal relationship.
Following these observances establishes a pattern of life that characterizes us as God’s people.

A Comedic Take on Moses receiving the Ten Commandments

That’s a classic scene from Mel Brooks. God has a sense of humor too, so it’s OK 🙂

Jon led a discussion of the Ten Commandments and how they guide us to live better lives.
