The Confirmation Mass goes very much like a regular Sunday Mass, except for four parts that are special for Confirmation.

The different parts are emphasized below, and also what the candidate or sponsor needs to do or say.

LITURGY OF THE WORD

The readings! It’s be great if you were familiar with the readings in advance. That would be the sort of “fully initiated Catholic thing” we want you to do, especially after you’re Confirmed 🙂

Fr Paul might choose to use the readings from July 25/26 for the August 1 Confirmation Mass. But if he chooses the Sunday readings from this weekend’s Mass, here they are:

Special for Confirmation Mass

** Presentation of the Candidates for Confirmation **

One of the parish leaders presents the Candidates to the one who will be confirming them (usually the bishop, but for these Confirmation Masses, it will be Fr Paul).

HOMILY

This is when the the priest breaks open the readings to give us a fuller understanding of the scriptures and how it applies to our lives.

** RENEWAL OF BAPTISMAL PROMISES **

The renewal of baptismal promises is where we re-affirm what we believe as Catholics. Think of it as a “question and answer” version of what we say in the Creed

After the homily, Fr Paul will ask the candidates (ALL YOU YOUNG PEOPLE) to stand in place and renew their Baptismal Promises by responding “I do” to each question. Don’t whisper. Answer clearly and confidently! This is what you believe. Say it PROUDLY.

Fr Paul will give some introductory remarks and then this how it will go:

Fr Paul: Do you reject Satan and all his works and all his empty promises?
Candidates: I do!

Fr Paul: Do you believe in God the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth?
Candidates: I do!

Fr Paul: Do you belief in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was born of the Virgin Mary, was crucified, died and was buried, rose from the dead, and is now seated at the right hand of the Father?
Candidates: I do!

Fr Paul: Do you believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of Life, who today through the Sacrament of Confirmation is given to you in special way just as he was given to the Apostles on the day of Pentecost?
Candidates: I do!

Fr Paul: Do you believe in the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting?
Candidates: I do!

Fr Paul: This is our faith. This is the faith of the Church. We are proud to profess it in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Assembly (everyone gathered at Mass): Amen!

** LAYING ON OF HANDS **

During the Laying on of Hands, Fr Paul will pray a special blessing over the Candidates. Since we will be outside, without kneelers, listen to Fr Paul’s instructions. He’ll probably ask the Candidates to remain standing.

Then Fr Paul will face everyone gathered and say something like the following:

Fr Paul: My dear friends, in Baptism God our Father gave the new birth of eternal life to his chosen sons and daughters. Let us pray to our Father that he will pour out the Holy Spirit to strengthen his sons and daughters with his gifts and anoint them to be more like Christ the Son of God.

Then all pray in silence for a short time. Next, Fr Paul and any concelebrating priests will extend their hands over the candidates, saying:

Fr Paul: All powerful God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, by water and the Holy Spirit you freed your sons and daughters from sin and gave them new life. Send your Holy Spirit upon them to be their Helper and Guide. Give them the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of right judgment and courage, the spirit of knowledge and reverence. Fill them with the spirit of wonder and awe in your presence. We ask this through Christ our Lord
Assembly: Amen!

All the Candidates will be asked sit at this point.

** ANOINTING WITH CHRISM **

This is the part of the Rite where those who are getting Confirmed receive the oil of Chrism on their forehead. Also this is where they receive a special outpouring of the HOLY SPIRIT!

We will be doing things a little differently here, compared to past years, because of coronavirus:

⇒ The Candidates will remain in their seats, everyone with their facemasks on.

⇒ Fr Paul will walk up to each Candidate where they are and invite the Candidate and Sponsor(s) to stand.

⇒ Fr Paul will stand at arm’s length in front of the Candidate

⇒ The Sponsor(s) will remain standing, 6′ from the Candidate. This year, unfortunately, the Sponsor(s) will not put their hand on the Candidate’s shoulder.

⇒ The Sponsor(s) will already have a card with the Confirmation Name of the Candidate. The Sponsor(s) will say the Confirmation Name to Fr Paul

At this point, Fr Paul will dip a cotton swab in the oil of Chrism. Then he will mark the sign of the cross on the forehead of the Candidate cotton swab.

The words spoken during the anointing are:

Fr Paul:  <CONFIRMATION NAME>, be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit.
Candidate: Amen!

Fr Paul:  Peace be with you.
Candidate: And with your spirit.

(No shaking hands)

Again, don’t whisper! Say “AMEN” and “AND WITH YOUR SPIRIT” clearly, confidently, and proudly! You’re getting a blast of the Holy Spirit and all the gifts that this will amplify in you!

This video illustrates how everyone will stand with social distancing during the anointing.

Anointing with Chrism with Social Distance, etc

The newly Confirmed and their Sponsor(s) then will sit down, and Fr Paul will move to the next Candidate.

The newly Confirmed should leave the oil on their forehead until at least after Mass is ended.

“HANDY” TIP: The best way to remove it after Mass is to use the palm of your hand to wipe it from the forehead, and then work it in to the hands like you are washing your hands (think of it as holy hand lotion!).

After the anointing, Mass continues pretty much like other Sunday Masses.

PRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL

This is the part where we say “Lord, hear our prayer.” Listen to each prayer that will be spoken. These will be special prayers for the newly Confirmed!

LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST

The Mass continues with the Liturgy of the Eucharist, like with a Sunday Mass. What will be different now with coronavirus is this:

⇒ Before Communion, a volunteer will bring hand sanitizer to everyone in their seats (all with their face masks on)

⇒ Then, a priest or Eucharistic Minister will be bring Communion to everyone in their seats (all with their face masks on)

⇒ During coronavirus, Communion is only given in the hands, for the safety of our community.

⇒ The priest or Eucharistic Minister places Communion into your “enthroned” hands (that’s just a church word for when you have both hands, palms facing up, with the top hand in the palm of the bottom hand) as pictured.

⇒ Wait until the priest or Eucharistic Minister is 6′ away. Then with one hand holding the Body of Christ, uncover your mouth and consume Jesus and replace your face mask afterwards. It’s best to touch only the “ear loop” of your mask while you do this.

ALL the newly Confirmed and their Sponsors should receive the Body of Christ!
